Fred Stevenson - Managing Director
Originally from Hawkes Bay, I was involved in both farming and orchard businesses before deciding to start up a security business in 1997 out of a converted pack shed on my apple orchard. In those days the business was called HomeSafe NZ. From these small and humble beginnings, we acquired our first monitoring station and then re-branded as HSM. Following my son Matt joining the business in 2007, we moved into purpose-built premises with a state-of-the-art monitoring station. My focus in the business has primarily been in the areas of monitoring, security officers and finance. Both Matt and I have been actively involved in the business, and we employ a hands-on approach to support both our staff and our customers.
Matt Stevenson - Managing Director
I have worked in the security industry for over twenty-five years plus. Starting out in 1995 as a salesperson in Christchurch, I then established my own security firm which I sold in 2006 so that I could join my father, Fred, in building the HSM group in my home region of Hawkes Bay. During that time, we have expanded the services offered, from security installations, monitoring and security officer protection to fire protection and compliance (building warrant of fitness) and have seen the group grow from two employees to over 90. Both Fred and I are passionate about protecting people and keeping their homes, businesses, and investments secure and my focus is on ensuring an outstanding customer experience.
I feel it is important to contribute to the development and future of the security industry and have been able to do this through my role on the board of the NZ Security Association. As part of this role, I am on the committee for the development of the Australian and New Zealand Standards for numerous security applications.
Christine Holt - Office Manager
I joined HSM in 2017, having returned to New Zealand after many years in the UK and the Isle of Man, working as a lawyer and then in more family friendly hours work in offshore client management, which has given me a breadth of experience that helps me in my work for HSM. I love the variety of work which my role as Office Manager encompasses, including HR, aspects of health and safety and training, client reporting, immigration requirements as an accredited employer for our team members starting a new life in New Zealand, compliance and audits specific to and required for our work (including ISO quality standards, the NZ Security Association and the Fire Protection Association) and generally assisting the directors as required. I like challenges and improving processes.
I feel privileged in this position to know every member of HSM’s team of staff and it is good to see them enjoy and build their roles and, in some cases, settle into a new country. I also enjoy working for a family-based business and having really great colleagues to work with.
Summer Crawford – Security Administrator
As the security administrator for HSM, I book jobs for our security technicians and I enjoy being one of the first people you might speak to at HSM regarding your security needs, including booking CCTV jobs, annual panel servicing and other new jobs or remedial work. I love the client contact and helping to provide a proactive “can do” service to clients. I also enjoy working with the HSM team and the variety that my role provides. Looking forward to speaking to you!
Debbie Coyle – Monitoring Manager
I have been happily employed as HSM’s monitoring manager since 2014 when I moved from Auckland to enjoy the wonderful Hawkes Bay lifestyle. I have been involved in monitoring and customer care for over 25 years. My role is to ensure all our clients’ monitoring and associated services are customised to provide a seamless service and to provide customer care and client follow ups. I am passionate about delivering an excellent service.
Anjay Hira – Compliance Manager (Building Warrant of Fitness)
I am a qualified registered electrician (registration E243501) with many years’ experience, heading up our compliance team, including technicians that carry out required monthly and annual checks for building warrant of fitness compliance requirements which requires a thorough and methodical approach. I joined HSM in early 2016 and have enjoyed building a team that not only includes the technicians carrying out checks and remedial work, but also our service fire administrator and sales consultant that can assist with all queries and paperwork relating to your building warrant of fitness requirements. I am IQP Registered in Hawkes Bay (372) and am a Level 4 Fire Technician.
Edie Scott - Project Supervisor
I have worked at HSM since February 2016 co-ordinating incoming requests and outgoing fire protection and security system tender quotations for building projects – and I love my job!
As project supervisor I make sure we have all the information needed so the estimators can price up projects. This involves liaison with individual clients and building contractors during the tendering process and then during on-going projects we have been contracted to carry out.
Nic van der Walt - Fire Manager
I have over 20 years’ experience in the fire Industry. In addition to technical knowledge, I have also developed skills in both project management and health and safety. I have designed, installed and maintained numerous large fire installations in South Africa in all different sectors, including large turbine power stations, export warehouses, distilleries, schools, office blocks and factories. I moved with my family to New Zealand in 2019 when I joined HSM. I have really enjoyed managing a brilliant team of technicians in the fire division, encouraging them in a positive and proactive culture. My aim is to take our fire division to the next level.
Nico Patterson – Guard Manager
My working career has spanned many years in the NZ Army and in the security industry, with experience gained from a wide variety of roles. I joined HSM in 2020 as the guard manager responsible for a large team of both static and patrol guards. I see the main role of “guarding” as the provision to our clients and community of a security presence that supplements existing protective measures. It prevents and deters illegal activity by being proactive through the provision of static or patrol services and it is also reactive in providing security solutions to our clients following incidents and or criminal activity. Security needs to provide safety and reassurance to our clients.
Having a good team is crucial to this success, and I really enjoy helping to put strategies in place and provide training to our guards to develop their skills and enable them to perform at their best, building the strength of HSM’s security team, while keeping both their clients and themselves safe. I am also enjoying meeting our existing and new clients so that I can get a good understanding of how we can help them best with their security requirements.
Peter Tomlinson – Security Projects
I trained and worked in Australia for several years, gaining valuable experience in the security industry including installing, servicing and testing access control systems and CCTV, before moving with my family to my wife’s home country of New Zealand. I joined HSM in 2015 to head up its security projects. I manage a team of technicians covering a wide range of security work for both residential and business customers from the smallest job to the largest projects, and have enjoyed the challenge of growing and supporting this team while also managing and overseeing a wide variety of security installations.
Mark Bense - Projects Consultant
Practical experience and qualifications (three year Diploma (Level 6) in Electrical Engineering Light Current and Post Graduate Project Management Certificate), have developed my skills in all sectors of the security and fire industry from being a Service Technician, Project Manager and Sales Manager for a large Systems Integrator to being an Account Manager and Projects and Solutions Manager for one of the largest security, fire and ICT distributors in Africa. This puts me in a unique position, allowing me to comprehensively understand all aspects of the fire and security industry.
My enthusiasm for the industry and thirst for knowledge with a selection of suitable products and brands ensures that I can deliver a solution for everyone’s requirements. Dealing with the ever-changing security technology allows me to be innovative and to constantly think of ways to sell and implement these new products. Understanding our market and all the problems our customers face means I must constantly think outside the box to assist them to overcome these problems. No installation or solution is the same.
I moved with my family to New Zealand at the beginning of 2020 to join HSM where I am enjoying using my experience and skills to come up with innovative ideas to find a workable solution for our customers.
Paul O’Regan – Security Sales
I have over 25 years’ experience in technical sales and marketing roles, gained in both New Zealand and the UK, giving me an understanding of many different industries and business drivers. Having previously spent time working in Auckland and Queenstown, I moved to Havelock North to raise my family and enjoy that awesome lifestyle we all love here. Since joining HSM in 2012, I have overseen hundreds of successful projects from start to finish, and now use my expertise managing key customers and complex customer requirements. I specialise in consulting, understanding customer needs and delivering solution-based fire and security systems, spanning all HSM disciplines.
Stephen Kearney – Guard and Security Sales
I have over 10 years’ experience within the security industry in Hawkes Bay. I joined HSM in 2015 as a sales consultant with a focus on guard services and technical sales, thus allowing me to offer the complete range of security services. Before this I was involved in the radio industry and NZ Customs.
Working closely with HSM’s security officers’ team, we can provide loss protection officers, static security officers and mobile patrol officers covering both Napier and Hastings, as well as other services including VIP protection, staff escorts, event management and cash handling. I also design security alarm systems, access control and CCTV for small to large businesses within Hawke’s Bay as well as dealing with fire and BWOF sales.
Vicki Clements – Sales Consultant BWOF and Security Sales
My role as the Building Warrant of Fitness (“BWOF”) consultant includes finding out what inspections and checks are needed for buildings to comply with the local council regulations. A BWOF for a building is the same as a WOF for your car – it confirms that the building’s safety features are working, including emergency lighting, fire alarms, access-controlled doors and other specified systems.
I also sell security alarms, alarm monitoring and security camera systems for both residential and small business customers. You may also meet me if you need alarm monitoring or are moving premises as I will be the person visiting you to set up your new agreement and requirements.
Milanda Armstrong – Service Supervisor
I enjoy my role as HSM’s service supervisor, with my principal daily duties being to assist our regional and nationwide customers with their CCTV and security requirements. Part of the job is to be a link between our team of technicians and our customers, working with the managers of the technicians to ensure we match the skill set of the technicians to the relevant job given the wide variety of work which we cover. I also co-ordinate the work of the service team members and help manage the technicians’ daily schedules. I enjoy customer service and going the extra mile to help our clients with their security needs.
Sophia Barbarouses – Fire and Compliance Administrator
I joined HSM’s service team in 2019 having come from a customer service background. I focus on providing administration and support for all matters relating to building warrant of fitness requirements, including issuing BWOFs, arranging compliance checks and attending to any building and fire enquires. I also help coordinate the jobs and schedules for our fire technicians. I really enjoy working with my colleagues in the fire team and my job as it gives me the chance to interact with our customers and build relationships with them.
