Automating Site Access with Licence Plate Recognition and Gates

Managing access across a busy industrial site was becoming both costly and inefficient for this client, especially with a full-time guard required on site.

In this recent Hawke’s Bay access control installation, we worked closely with the client to find a smarter solution that maintained security while significantly reducing ongoing costs.

The challenge was clear: maintain strong site security, restrict access to authorised vehicles only, and eliminate the high yearly cost of a 24/7 guard presence.

While this project focused on a commercial site, gate automation and access control can also be tailored for residential properties, offering added security, convenience and control for everyday use. To see more about how this can work in different settings, read our 2025 gate automation update here.

Client Challenge

The site relied on a guard stationed in a guard house to manage access, resulting in significant ongoing labour costs year after year. The client wanted to decrease yearly spend but still ensure the site remained secure and trackable.

Our Solution

We delivered a fully automated access control solution that combined intelligent technology with real human support when needed. The system was designed around how the site operates daily, ensuring seamless integration without disrupting workflow.

This included licence plate recognition (LPR) cameras, automated boom and roller gates, and intercom integration with HSM’s monitoring team. Approved vehicles are automatically recognised, allowing gates to open instantly with no need for remotes or access codes. All vehicle movements are logged, giving the client full visibility and control over who is entering the site. LPR cameras capture and verify licence plates in real time against an approved access list. If a vehicle is not recognised, the system triggers a call to HSM’s A1-graded monitoring centre, where our team can visually verify the situation via cameras and grant or deny access accordingly. This ensures they are still able to manage vehicle entry and exit without needing a physical guard on site.

The Outcome

The results for the client were significant. The system paid for itself within just 6 months through savings on guard costs alone. Previously, the client was paying for a guard to be stationed on site full time. Now, that cost has been eliminated while maintaining, and even improving, site security.

It also removes uncertainty around who is on site at any time, which is critical for large or high-traffic operations. As with every project, the system was tailored specifically to the client’s site and operational requirements. The flexibility of this solution means it can easily adapt as the site grows or requirements change over time. Every site is different, but this project highlights how the right combination of technology and monitoring can completely transform site security.
