Heading away? Here’s how to protect your home

After eight weeks of exploring your most frequently asked questions, we thought it was the perfect time to circle back to where this series began, your home security.
One of the simplest but most overlooked areas of protection is your valuables and how visible they are. Laptops, handbags, and devices sitting near windows can catch the eye of anyone passing by, so it’s worth keeping them out of sight. Jewellery, cash, or other items should be stored in a safe or at least tucked away in a secure spot rather than left out in the open. Even the packaging from new TVs or tech can be a giveaway to what’s inside your home, so breaking down and hiding boxes before putting them out for recycling is a smart move.
Lighting can also play a big part. Motion-activated lights instantly remove the cover of darkness and take away the chance of someone going unseen. That sudden burst of light is often enough to make intruders think twice, while also giving you or your neighbours better visibility at night.
None of these steps take long, but together they go a long way in making your home feel protected. If you know someone who’s heading away soon, share this with them so they’ve got a few extra reminders.
Next week will be our final post in this series, where we’ll bring all of your commonly asked questions together in a set of handy checklists to help you protect what matters most. And while this series may be wrapping up, don’t worry we’ve got something new on the way that you won’t want to miss.
